Election funding: EFCC Promised to go after politicians, parties’ bank accounts As Nigerians await the conduct of the 2019 general elections, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is beaming its searchlight on politicians and political parties in a bid to track the sources of funds for their campaigns. To this end, the commission has set up teams to monitor election spendings ahead of the elections. Impeccable sources within the EFCC said it would also monitor the movement of money for the Ekiti governorship election, which holds on July 14 Already,  the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has met with the chief compliance officers of banks. At the meeting, which held on May 30 this year, the EFCC chairman mandated banks to report all suspicious transactions ahead of the election, threatening to prosecute any bank that failed to cooperate. The monies are expected to be repatriated from the UK, US, France and other countries, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja. “Nigeria has engaged other countries, including the UK, US, France and others, in further negotiations relating to repatriation. “I am happy to report that we are almost concluding the processes relating to the repatriation of additional $500 million,” Malami said. A fake pharmacist and drug dealer, Nura Aliyu, was arrested in possession of six cartons equivalent to 300 bottles of codeine syrup and about 142 empty packs sold in Katsina State.   The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Wakili, while parading the suspect, said he was arrested along Senator Abba Ali Road by Mohd Dikko Stadium.   Aliyu said it was destined to happen, but he regretted his actions. His words: “I regret my actions. I have stopped the business some three years back. It was only yesterday that I went back to it and I was arrested.   We give it out wholesale in my shop. I have a chemist in Tsohon Tasha. People come inside the town to buy from my shop. They are mostly men. The empty packs are the ones they bought and went with it.”
